You'll book your own round-trip flights from Honolulu (HNL) to either Hilo (ITO) or Kona (KOA). We recommend morning departures and evening returns. Airlines like Hawaiian, Southwest, and Mokulele offer multiple daily flights – we're happy to advise on timing.

Which airport should I fly into – Hilo or Kona?

It depends on what you want to see! Fly into Hilo for the best volcano and waterfall access. Fly into Kona for coffee country and coastal experiences. We can design an itinerary for either, or even a one-way where you fly into one and out of the other.

How much time will I have on the Big Island?

With typical flight schedules, you'll have 8-10 hours for touring. We coordinate pickup times with your arrival and ensure you're back at the airport with time to spare for your return flight.

Absolutely! Many of our guests say their Big Island day trip was the highlight of their Hawaii vacation. You'll see active volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and experience a completely different side of Hawaii than Oahu offers.

Yes! Our private tours are perfect for families. We pace the day appropriately for children and can adjust stops based on age and interests. The flight is only about 45 minutes – often shorter than a drive across Oahu in traffic.

What can I realistically see in one day on the Big Island from Oahu?

With a 6 am departure and an 8 pm return, you have roughly 9 hours of ground time. On a Hilo-side day, that comfortably covers Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (Kīlauea summit, the caldera overlooks, a short hike), one waterfall stop (Rainbow Falls or ʻAkaka), and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach – with time for lunch and at least one unscripted stop. You will not see Mauna Kea summit, the full Kona coast, and the volcano in a single day.

Should I fly Hawaiian, Southwest, or Mokulele?

Hawaiian Airlines runs the most frequent schedule (every 60-90 minutes peak hours) and has the best on-time record – our default recommendation. Southwest is usually cheapest if you book 3+ weeks ahead. Mokulele uses 9-seat propeller planes, lands at smaller terminals (faster in/out), and is the fastest option Oahu to Kona – but flights are weight-restricted and weather-sensitive. For a day trip, prioritize on-time reliability over price; a missed morning flight can cost you the entire trip.

Is a Hilo-side day better than a Kona-side day?

Hilo-side wins for first-time visitors and anyone who wants volcanoes + waterfalls. Hilo Airport is 45 minutes from Volcanoes National Park, which leaves real time inside the park. Kona-side wins if you want black sand beaches + Kona coffee country + manta-ray dusk snorkel – but the volcano is a 2-hour drive each way from Kona airport, so trying to do both volcano and Kona in one day means a lot of windshield time.

What does the all-in cost look like for two people?

Roughly: $250-$400 for two round-trip inter-island flights, $1,600 for the private chauffeured tour (per vehicle, up to 6 guests), $40 park entrance, $40-$60 lunch for two. Total around $2,000-$2,100 for a couple, and the same $1,600 tour fee covers a group of 4-6, which drops the per-person cost meaningfully.

What time should we book our flights?

Outbound: the earliest flight you can stomach – ideally departing Honolulu between 5:30 am and 6:30 am, landing on the Big Island around 6:30-7:30 am. Return: aim for a 7:30-9:00 pm departure so you have buffer if the day runs long (especially if you want to be in Volcanoes National Park around dusk). Avoid the last flight of the night – if anything goes wrong, there's no backup.
