What you'll realistically do in a single day

The honest version: an Oʻahu-to-Big Island day trip is one of the most rewarding things you can do in Hawaii, but only if you commit to a single side of the island. Trying to see both the volcano and the Kona coast in one day means three hours of driving and forty-five minutes at every stop. Pick a lane.

Hilo-side day – volcanoes and waterfalls

    • • 7:30 am – Land in Hilo, meet your chauffeur curbside.
    • • 8:00 am – Rainbow Falls (or ʻAkaka, depending on conditions).
    • • 9:00 am – Drive to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, 45 minutes south.
    • • 9:45 am-2:00 pm – Kīlauea Visitor Center, the caldera overlooks (Uēkahuna, Keanakākoʻi if open), Steam Vents, Sulphur Banks, a short Kīlauea Iki overlook walk. Lunch in or near Volcano Village.
    • • 2:30 pm – Drive south to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach for turtle viewing.
    • • 4:00 pm – Begin the return to Hilo with a coffee stop.
    • • 6:30 pm – Land back in Honolulu.

Kona-side day – coast, coffee, and culture

    • • 7:30 am – Land in Kona, meet your chauffeur.
    • • 8:30 am – Kealakekua Bay overlook and Captain Cook Monument coastline.
    • • 10:00 am – Kona coffee farm tour and tasting in the Captain Cook area.
    • • 12:00 pm – Lunch on the historic Kailua-Kona waterfront.
    • • 1:30 pm – Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park (Place of Refuge).
    • • 3:30 pm – Hāpuna or Mauna Kea Beach for an hour of pure beach time.
    • • 5:30 pm – Return to Kona airport.
Want to see Realistic in one day? Which airport
Kīlauea caldera and overlooks Yes Hilo
Rainbow Falls or ʻAkaka Falls Yes Hilo
Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach Yes (long day) Hilo
Kona coffee + coast Yes Kona
Mauna Kea summit at sunset No (need overnight)
Volcano AND Kona coast same day No (too much driving)
Hilo-side AND Kona-side same day No

Flight comparison: Hawaiian vs Southwest vs Mokulele

    • Hawaiian Airlines: Most frequent, best on-time performance, jet aircraft. Default pick for a day trip. ~45 min flight time.
    • Southwest: Usually the cheapest if booked 3+ weeks out, two free checked bags, modern aircraft. Schedule is less dense than Hawaiian.
    • Mokulele: 9-seat turboprops, smaller terminals, faster in-and-out. Weight-restricted and weather-sensitive – not the right call if you have a fixed schedule.

    All-in cost for two

A realistic all-in for a couple flying from Honolulu:

    • • Round-trip inter-island flights for two: $250-$400
    • • Private chauffeured Big Island tour (per vehicle, up to 6 guests): $1,600
    • • National Park entrance: $40
    • • Lunch and coffee: $50-$80
    • Total: ~$2,000-$2,100 for two

The vehicle price is fixed, so a group of four or six pays the same $1,600 – the per-person math gets meaningfully better as the group grows.
